Douglas Arts in Mossman promotes work of talented local high school students.

Douglas Arts (DAB) girls, Georgia Hober and Dominique Kirchner have been best friends for four years, sharing fun, art classes and teenage dramas all that time.

Georgia is sixteen years old and Dominique, seventeen. Both are students of Mossman State High School and currently completing their final year. Both girls study art at school, and Dominique also studies photography.

They have been active DAB members for two years, and have concentrated on developing their skills in oil painting with tutor Nada Petrasevic, hardly ever missing a class.

Young artists, Dominique and Georgia

DAB (Douglas Arts Base or Douglas Arts Inc) was set up in Mossman in 2002 as an arts centre so that the Douglas Shire community could participate in a wide range of interactive arts projects, with professional artists/teachers providing a high standard of tuition.

DAB DUETS were the brainchild of senior tutor, Peter Culley, whose idea was to hold regular exhibitions highlighting the best work by two students - preferably with contrasting styles.

Student exhibitors, Georgia and Dom have also attended DAB life drawing classes with Rose Watts, as well as Still Life classes with Jill Booth at Arthouse Port Douglas, to further develop their passion for art.

Their works are an exploration of a wide range of subject matter, media and styles. Both girls are serious about their artwork, and encourage and tease each other to explore and develop their abilities further.

They arrive at art classes bouncing and giggling, and can hardly wait for the class to start. Their joy and effervescent personalities affect everyone around them.

Georgia enjoys painting people, animals and children, the resultant works imbued with passion, deep meaning and emotional impact. She finds her subject matter captivating and feels that it is easier to produce high-quality work if it is important to her in some way.

Her painting is based on good technique, a willingness to push boundaries and to take time to develop quality. She is often to be found working quietly, concentrating on achieving the exact tone or colour to use to get that "just right" finish.

Dominique has also explored everything from people to creatures, and has enjoyed developing proficiency in creating exacting textures and finishes.

Her most recent works explore femininity and sexuality – a must for any teenage girl!

Her nudes are sensitive and vibrant, and glow with the vitality of youth.

She enjoys drawing, particularly charcoal and graphite, exploring her emotions and feelings, her relationships and dreams.

Dominique's sketchbooks are full of experimental drawings and exquisite studies that often develop into amazing oil paintings.

She also studies photography, producing black and white, colour and digital images that involve people and the world around her in sensitive and creative compositions.

Both girls have a love of life, a great joy in their friendship, and a strong affection for friends, family and tutors that encompass their world.

They are fortunate that they have grasped opportunities to further their artistic development through professional but inexpensive classes run by local art groups such as Douglas Arts and Arthouse Port Douglas.
