Artist-in-Residence, Terry Johnson, invites you into his world of fantasy!
Artist-in-Residence, Terry Johnson, is no stranger to life in Tropical North Queensland. A popular visiting artist and teacher at Port Douglas resorts and galleries, he has brought joy into many lives through his art and friendly personality.
Terry lives at Robe in South Australia with his wife, Nancy. Together they run a gallery of fine art - and, incidentally, over the years of visiting Far North Queensland, have introduced artists from the Cairns area, such as Anna Curtis, to their display.
His self portrait shown here certainly accentuates his beaming smile!
Terry seems to enjoy interacting with people, which is one of the reasons that he is such an asset to resorts, where he becomes a virtual ambassador for the arts and Australian culture.

His artwork is engaging and varied, with sculptures sitting comfortably alongside acrylic or experimental paintings, which use rusts and ochres of the inland Australian landscape.
Terry's paintings of the ocean and the creatures which inhabit it are keen insights into our view of the marine world, tinged with more than a little touch of fantasy!
Terry will be the artist-in-residence at Coconut Grove Resort, Port Douglas. He will work in the resort, perhaps at breakfast time and again in the late afternoon/evening so that guests have a good opportunity to enjoy watching him at work and chatting with him.
Then you will be able to catch him hard at work, or running a workshop at the old sugar wharf.
This is a prestigious programme and one which guests enjoy, some, in past years citing it as the highlight of their holiday!

From 10 am on most days you will also be able to catch him hard at work painting or running a workshop at the old sugar wharf.
Because Terry will be our first festival guest artist-in-residence it is fitting that his subject matter often reflects his sense of joy, of celebration - and lighthearted fantasy.

Terry's work will be included in the "Low Isles, the Reef and Beyond" exhibition at the old sugar wharf shed in Port Douglas. This is such a romantic venue, with its backdrop of towering mountains to the north, seen across the blue water of the inlet.
The sense of history there is pervasive as we imagine the ships of bygone days coming into port, laden with supplies for the goldfields, and taking out sugar, gold and cedar. There's still even a small hole in a door for the resident cat of bygone days!

"Gold Rush" and "Pelicans' Lunch"
We hope to be able to run workshops or demonstrations every day in the sugar wharf during the exhibition and Terry will be one of the artists involved - perhaps appearing for a while, most days. The sugar wharf will then become the "hub" of festival activities and also an information centre for other arts events.

The title of this painting is "Group Therapy" - love it? Please follow this link for more images of Terry's paintings and information about him.
