August 2009 Media Release - Special Workshop Experiences

August 2009 brings much activity in preparation for the Go Troppo Arts Festival. Organisers have been busy lining up an impressive choice of "hands-on"art experiences just for you!

Experience fabulous arts workshops in stunning locations

One of the themes of the Go Troppo Arts Festival is renewal and abundance, exemplified by the coral spawning and fruit and flower-laden trees at this time of the year before the onset of the Wet season. The cornucopia of arts workshops that await you this October 2 – 11 are central to that concept.

Designed to offer you an experience that you could not have elsewhere, the day-long workshops are located in rainforest, mountains and on the waterfront.

Participating tutors are all professional artists who have long teaching experience and enjoy interacting with students as they learn skills in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.

Where else could you spend the day with the inventor and manufacturer of artists' paints at his home, enjoying his hospitality and finding out just what those paints and mediums can do for you, the experienced painter?

The opportunity to attend a life-drawing class in a rainforest creek and then develop your own painting myth from that scene is one which will be snapped up by those few who are quick to apply.

Would you like to develop a portrait in paint or life-sized portrait in clay during one intensive day's directed activity at the historic old sugar wharf with its backdrop of blue mountains and tidal inlet? Throw dye at a silk scarf and take away treasured mementos of this unorthodox painting method?

Perhaps catching the acting bug is a risk that you're willing to take as you engage with a world-renowned actor in her amazing theatre in the rainforest? Or is making a dreamy watercolour of rainforest landscapes and a soft oil painting of turquoise seas more to your liking?

Have you tried making your own artist's journal or sculptural book from special papers and binding methods or investigated the addictive qualities of developing your own original prints using vinyl or perspex ?

Even beginners can make glass jewellery or glass paperweights in this art glass workshop hide-away, supervised by world famous glass artists or interact with nature in a haiku writing session in a private, walled garden courtyard.

Have you ever made a small movie using your own hand-crafted characters? If you’re “game”, so is your instructor! For a different pace and a great aerobic work-out tune into Egyptian or Brazilian dance rhythms and learn more about yourself in the process.

When you think that you just can’t fit in any more there's the creative sculpture workshop, where all of your imaginative ideas can take physical form under the guidance of your skilled tutor. And every day you get to eat delicious food and socialise with interesting people.

Please check out the choice of workshops from the website - then register your interest right away. Minimum and maximum numbers apply to all workshops so please book as soon as possible to ensure your place.

The cost of these inexpensive workshops has been subsidised by the Regional Arts Development Fund (Arts Queensland and Cairns Regional Council) and Jim and Josephine Cobb from Chroma Australia as well as by the donation of considerable time by volunteer organisers.
