"Low Isles, the Reef and Beyond" kicks off the inaugural Go Troppo Arts Festival 2008.
Leading artists of the Port Douglas/Cairns region will come together again to present "Low Isles, the Reef and Beyond". Artists involved are Low Isles Preservation Society volunteers, who know the island well. In 2007 they took a general look at
various aspects of the island
its history, including aboriginal creation stories, the reef and coral lagoon, bird life, the lighthouse and the current impact of tourism on these fragile sand cays.
Their explorations resulted in a highly successful exhibition, which then toured to
Cairns Regional Gallery
in February 2008.
In October 2008 their research will focus more specifically on the Great Barrier Reef and also the possible effects of global warming on the reefs surrounding Low Isles and beyond. The islands, named by explorer, James Cook, comprise Low Island and Woody Island, low sand cays, which change size and shape with the influences of ever-moving tides and ocean currents. They are surrounded by ancient reef, which protects a coral lagoon, teeming with marine life ...colourful fish dart excitedly about or hide shyly in sea grasses, turtles pop to the surface of the clear water, clam shells squirt, reef sharks cruise along in pursuit of schools of tiny fish to play with (or swallow, I guess), oysters... well, they look pretty passive to me!
Participating artists in 2008 are Helen Low,
Judy Richards,
Anna Curtis,
Linda Jackson,
Louise Collier,
Marie Simberg-Hoglund,
Linda Lorywood, Stephanie Milne, Tina Gonsalves, Ola Hoglund, Hayley Hamilton,
Jill Booth
and guest artists, Terry Johnson and Lone White.
Here they start to plan the exhibition.

Terry is also to be our artist-in-residence, graciously hosted by the brand new, elegant Coconut Grove Resort. An artist-in-residence programme is quite a prestigious one with which to be involved so guests, the artist, the community and the Arts in general all benefit from the relationship.Terry brings a wealth of experience - and good humour - to the job. He will be painting in public, at the resort and at the exhibition. He has also offered to give workshops at the sugar wharf. Please let us know, via the form below, if you are interested in any workshops that we can organise at the sugar wharf as part of the exhibition. Cost to you will be minimal but is also dependent on numbers.
If you would like to buy tickets (early-bird special only $25) for the gala cocktail party festival opening, please visit Candlenut Gallery in Macrossan Street or Quicksilver Connections at the Marina. On-line bookings
