Media Release June 2009

Media Release June 5, 2009

With the Go Troppo Arts Festival less than four months away, artists of the region are gearing up for this exciting multi-arts celebration.

Now in its second year, Go Troppo Arts Festival will have much to offer participants and visitors, with a wide range of visual art exhibitions, theatrical and musical workshops and performances as well as street theatre, poetry and dance.

‘The magic of the tropics’ is the overall theme of the festival this year as various aspects of life in this far-flung region are examined by painters, musicians and performers.

Renowned playwright, actor and director, Jack Heywood, will introduce ‘theatre in the round’ to audiences with the presentation of his newest play (currently being written) about the life and influence of Max and Diana Bowden. Famous for establishing the Nautilus restaurant in Port Douglas, the couple also influenced the style of the small town with its exclusive boutiques, restaurants – and characters.

Two of the Bowden’s daughters will travel from London for the play’s premiere, which will be further enhanced by the presentation of an exhibition of much of Diana’s shell jewellery, stored for decades at their third daughter’s house in Townsville.

Of course, for such a varied programme to be successful, enormous effort, skills and teamwork are required. Last year the whole town, it seemed, got right behind the festival, which, as well as promoting the arts of the region, aims to assist local businesses by extending the tourist season.

The ‘Friends of the Festival’ group of volunteers has already started preparations for the myriad tasks that lie ahead. Here Jeanette Yarr and Lynn Devlin enjoy themselves painting one of the giant signs that will be used to promote exhibitions.
