"Max and Diana of the Nautilus", a new play by Jack Heywood.
Jack Heywood's new play, "Max and Diana of the Nautilus", will be premiered in Port Douglas on October 6 as part of Go Troppo Arts Festival 2009. Having known Max and Diana Bowden years ago, playwright, Jack Heywood had always admired their style and, early in 2009, started researching their lives and their influence on the small resort town of Port Douglas.
He was assisted in this interesting task by the Bowden's daughters, Melissa and Kate. Melissa has been recording and sending her memories of those early days in "Port" from her London home, while Kate, Jack discovered, had a fabulous treasure trove of memorabilia and beautiful jewellery stored in a container in her back yard in Townsville.
We are delighted that both daughters will attend the opening performance.
Max and Diana Bowden
Max and Diana Bowden were an extraordinary English couple who settled in Port Douglas after World War II and were to leave their stamp on the town. Diana became world famous for her unique
shell jewellery
and Max for pioneering the exotic fruit and flower industry. They became legendary for their hospitality, welcoming friends and guests from around the world. The play celebrates their flamboyant personalities as the couple shelter from an oncoming cyclone and confront their memories.
Experienced, professional actors
The producers of “Max & Diana of the Nautilus” are happy to announce they have been able to cast two of Port’s best known theatre personalities to play the two roles in the forthcoming production.
Luke MacDonald will play Max Bowden and Lynn Cropp will play his wife, Diana.
Lynn Cropp has had a long association with the Clink Theatre besides directing and performing in such shows as Steele Magnolias”, “Gulls”, and “Shirley Valentine”. Lynn was the driving force behind acquiring the Old Courthouse & Lock-up in Mossman and moving it to Port Douglas to be renovated and re-designed to become the Clink Theatre. Now living in Cairns, Lynn has continued her work in theatre at the popular Rondo Theatre. Her most recent directorial work was “Gulls”.
Luke MacDonald has appeared in seventeen productions at the Clink Theatre since arriving in Port in 1998. The first play he appeared in was directed by Lynn Cropp and most recently he played ‘Christopher Skase’ in “Too Good to be True” and the one-eyed lobbyist in “The Amalgamation Play”.
CAST and CREW
Luke MacDonald as Max Bowden
Luke arrived in Port in 1989 and has been seen in the best of plays presented at the Clink Theatre - seventeen in all and he has charmed audiences in every one of them. Most memorably he was Christopher Skase in “Too Good To Be True” and recently the one-eyed lobbyist in “The Amalgamation Play”.
Lynn Cropp as Diana Bowden
Canadian-born, now thoroughly assimilated in the Far North, multi-talented Lynn is a local hero, having been the driving force behind drumming up support to get the Old Mossman Courthouse dropped off across the road and "tarted up" to become the Clink Theatre. Meanwhile she’s been making nature films, acting her socks off around Cairns and directing shows. She remembers Diana and Port back then.
Shaun Cram Producer
British-born, now ocker to his bootstraps, Shaun trained as an actor in London and immigrated to Oz in 1998. He has appeared at the Clink playing 15 roles in three plays - his favourite, the devil in “Too Good To Be True”. His day job is running the Mossman Hospital.
Jack Heywood Director
Jack first visited Port in 1958, settled here in the 70’s, left and returned in 2001. Along the way, he worked in theatre, TV and film in Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane. Jack directed “Jemmy Green in Australia”, “The Sins of Ellen Thomson”, and “The Amalgamation Play” for the Clink and “Too Good To Be True” for Portfolio Productions. With “Max and Diana of the Nautilus” he continues his commitment to home-grown theatre.
