Reef Futures Festival is crammed with activities for young and old.

The emphasis of the Reef Futures Festival is on climate change and how it will impact on the future of the Great Barrier Reef, which is on our doorstep.

Integrated with the Go Troppo Arts Festival, the reef celebrations are timed to be part of a global awareness of the fragility of reef systems world-wide.

2008 had been designated the International Year of the Reef so the Port Douglas activities link with and support the world organisation's aims.

These are "to raise awareness about the value and importance of coral reefs and threats to their sustainability, and to motivate people to take action to protect them".

FRIDAY OCTOBER 25

Film screenings

The art components of the Reef Futures Festival include children's and adults' film screenings on two evenings - Friday October 24 and Saturday June 25.

Children's films feature eleven short films, many of which were winners of the Antibes Film Festival 2007. Several will have their first airing in English at Port Douglas! Friday's children's programme will be repeated on Saturday.

Adult programmes are different on each night and feature Antibes winning films as well as some features from local film-makers.

SATURDAY OCTOBER 26

Workshops

Imagine how exciting it must be to engage in underwater adventures by scuba diving or snorkelling!

No doubt many of you have been thrilled to observe or interact with marine creatures of the nearby reefs and to marvel at corals and the exotic marine creatures which inhabit them.

Have you ever wished that you could capture these special encounters on film or digitally?

Well now's your chance!

On Saturday October 25, local underwater photographic expert, David Miller, will be presenting workshops that should answer all your questions!

All photographs on this page are by David Miller. Aren't they wonderful? Are you inspired to learn more?

Underwater Photographic Exhibitions

Held in conjunction with these workshops and the Reef Check Underwater Photographic Competition, a display of underwater photographs from local photographers will add to your enjoyment.

No doubt about it, Saturday will be an action-packed day and perfect for the whole family!

Try a plethora of interactive, educational booths, workshops...the list goes on...

How about a delicious lunch? Is that the enticing smell of a sausage sizzle wafting across the lawn?

Futures Forum

On Saturday evening things become a little more serious as the Futures Forum swings into action.

"Climate Change - where will we be in Fifty Years?" is the topic under discussion.

This giant barracuda might well be wondering what we are doing for his descendants' future.

John Connor, CEO of the Climate Institute, will deliver a keynote speech, followed by lively discussions by leading reef scientists.

Now's your chance to ask the experts what can really be done to protect such a finite resource.

Don't be shy ! Ask away!

The Reef Futures Festival culminates with a late-night showing of more fantastic underwater films at the Clink Theatre.
