Shades of Green music and art soiree opens at Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas.
Shades of Green is a collaboration between classically trained musician, Rhonda Berry, and textile designer artist, Linda Jackson. Each brings her unique talents to an event which celebrates the marriage of art and music at the Daintree Lounge at the Sheraton Mirage Resort Port Douglas on Saturday October 30th. Entry is free and guests will receive complimentary nibbles on arrival and a cash bar will operate with special prices for this Go Troppo event from 7pm - 9pm. Linda Jackson says she drew inspiration from the Daintree rainforest for her installation, which takes the format of a long, Japanese-style screen made up of 8 individual panels. “It couldn’t be more appropriate to place Shades of Green within the area of the Daintree Lounge at this resort,” says Linda Jackson. “There are millions of shades of green within that rainforest which surrounds us. When I go away south and return I am always struck again by just how amazing the colour spectrum of nature is, and how compelling the jungle out there can be. It’s mysterious, it’s shades of dark and light and it's the perfect subject to translate into art and music.”
Wall of Forest
Linda’s large screens represent a wall of forest created from pigment dyes and paint on cloth and took her several weeks to create. “I describe Shades of Green as ‘art by invention’ “ she laughs. “Its been a wonderful opportunity to design something to work in the space available in the Daintree Lounge, which is such a terrific location with its aspect flowing outside to the surrounding palms and water.” Linda will also be presenting a workshop ‘Indigo Blues to Dye For’ during the festival programme.
Shades of Green’s musical programme is directed by Rhonda Berry, and presented by Rhonda (piano), Helen Schaffer (soprano), and Anita Berry (violin). It comprises: "Shades of Green" - a set of short pieces for solo piano inspired by the rainforest. "Reef Reflections" - a set for soprano, violin and piano with lyrics about the Douglas region by Queensland poet, Aub Podlich. "So True is my Love" is a song with lyrics written by the first Anglican bishop of North Queensland, Gilbert White. All pieces were composed and written by Rhonda Berry.

“The pieces are chosen to weave the expression of the theme ‘Shades of Green’ throughout. This is expressed musically as the twisting liana vines on the edge of the rainforest, the towering canopy above, the depth of its shadows, the soft brush of a fern, the tranquility of rainforest pools and the trills of doves and parrots as they dart through the shades of green,” explains Rhonda Berry.
