Yoshiko Kirby launches solo exhibition for Go Troppo Arts Festival 2009.

Yoshiko Kirby remarks "As a Japanese immigrant, my native culture is very different from that of Western countries. My first language is therefore obviously not English.

Living in Australia sometimes makes me feel that I do not fit easily into this society. Similarly, I believe there is now little place for me in Japan any more.

Possibly because of this dilemma, I took up painting not so long ago and have approached it with both feeling and urgency."

She continues "For me, art is a language that speaks without words. It is silent, yet here I can try to convey intense ideas and emotions, without having to resort to the difficulties of verbal description.

I am most comfortable whilst creating paintings, for I can both connect to my inner-most soul as well as communicate concepts to the viewers of my work.

After some formative years dealing with conventional and semi-abstracted images, I now endeavour to be a story-teller. I am especially interested in psychological and philosophic themes, particularly those that have applied to my own life journey.

I have called my current exhibition 'The Way I See It', a title which explains some of these differences in perception"

About her working methods Yoshiko says "My subjects are varied, with ideas emanating from imagination, experience and the magical inspiration of dreams.

Colour-wise, I explore subtlety rather than bold and powerful pigments and I enjoy experimenting with textures and layering.

I work primarily in acrylics, yet sometimes I will use other media including oils, pastels, watercolour, collage, washi-paper and inks, depending on what I consider suitable for the project.

I have been painting with the advanced group at the Douglas Arts Base (DAB) with Mr. Peter Culley since 2006. Working with similar-minded artists, my creativity is stimulated by being exposed to new ideas and techniques in what is a congenial yet serious atmosphere."

Yoshiko Kirby's first solo exhibition, to be held at Douglas Arts Base in Mossman, is eagerly anticipated by her peers, who recognise that a great emerging talent is about to burst onto the FNQ art scene.
